With Christmas looming ever nearer, the sales racks are starting to groan with the weight of party albums all claiming to have that peculiar X Factor to make those seasonal parties just that little bit more special. Soul folks, I guess, can pass on most but this new 60 track triple CD set from the Ministry of Sound people is worth checking out. It pulls together all the big tunes from the classic disco era and, yes musical styles and fads come and go but those old disco war horses still have the ability to get people off the wall… even that spotty adolescent from the mail room!
It would be redundant to list the tracks or cherry pick standouts but suffice to say that almost all the big tunes and the big artists are in there…. Chic, The Trammps, Candi Staton, Chaka Khan, Sister Sledge, The O’Jays, EWF, Rose Royce… even the Jacksons… and any soul person worth his/her salt can name their respective tunes. There are a few slightly less obvious selections (I’m thinking Change and some Salsoul cuts) and we do need to add a brief health warning. The set also boasts tunes from Leo Sayer, Imagination and Boney M… but they’re well outweighed by the “proper” music.
For an opportunity to win this great little party collection, go to our news pages. The competition isn’t that difficult – but the closing date is November 15th.
