P M Warson is a London-based singer/songwriter/guitarist who delivers his own take on retro soul, with, occasionally, a bluesy undertow. He’s released a slew of singles and two well- received albums (‘Dig Deep, Repeat’ and ‘True Story’). ‘A Little More Time’ is the man’s third full long player and it continues to offer Mr W’s dalliance with the retro.
The album release was flagged up via two taster singles. First we had ‘Right Here, Last Night’ – a throbbing Northern soul pastiche. That was followed by the album title track – ‘A Little More Time’. This one’s a little less frantic but just as authentic. Indeed it has the same shuffling feel as the Motown chestnut ‘You Beat Me To The Punch’. It’s a good ‘un and interestingly the album edit clocks in at over 6 minutes – the single edit was just over 3! Clearly PM believe you can’t have too much of a good thing!
There are plenty of other “good things” on offer – “good”, that is, if retro sounds are your thing. Particulary interesting is the beaty ‘Win or Lose’ which has an intro based, it seems, on ‘Needle In A Haystack’ before developing into a sort of rockabilly/Southern soul hybrid. Like we said “interesting”. There are more shadings of Southern soul sprinkled throughout the ten tracker – things like ‘Thinking Of Leaving’ and the dramatic ‘In the Heights’ could have been recorded down in Memphis rather than at London’s Lightship 95 studio – famed for its analogue facilities, by the way. And that recording method gives this album a live, “for real” sound. Out now!
