Since the beginning of the year we’ve been enjoying some great retro soul singles from US West Coast band, THE SEXTONES – (childhood friends, Mark Sexton (guitar, vocals), Alexander Korostinsky (bass), Daniel Weiss (drums), and Christopher Sexton (piano)).
We found soulful delight in their cover versions of things like Jean Plum’s ‘Here I Go Again’, Papa Bear and his Cubs’ ‘You’re So Fine’ and the Intruders’ ‘Cowboys To Girls’. Then there was the original song ‘Better Late Than Never’ which came with the welcome news that there was a whole Sextones LP on the way. The bad news, though, is that we have to wait till September for the album!
However to make us feel a little bit better, the boys have just released a new single… another wonderful retro soul groove, ‘Without You’. It’s an up-tempo offering with classic call and response vocals , tight beats, chinking guitars and feel-good vibes. Production is down to Monophonics frontman Kelly Finnigan who knows a thing or two about retro soul. ‘Without You’ is released via Record Kicks.
