WITH LOTS OF LOVE AND PLENTY OF PURPOSE!

FIRST WORD RECORDS is one the UK’s premier, independent, boutique soul and club music labels, but unlike many of those hard working, enthusiast-led  imprints, instead of specialising in in-demand and rare US oldies, First World focuses on new, newish and classic music from the cream of the UK soul and underground club scene.

The label was  born in 2003 as a collaboration between club promoter Aly Gllani and deejay Andy H. The duo were frustrated that the club music they loved, played and promoted didn’t really have a decent UK outlet. So, they  got stuck in! The label’s first release came a year later –  2004’s  ‘Two Syllables’ compilation.

So, even we can work out that First Word is now a mighty 20 years old and what better way to mark the occasion than by releasing another wonderful compilation – thus, 16th August sees the release of ‘Love & Purpose’.

The Aly Gillani-curated album is a double vinyl set and it’s a lovely celebration of underground Brit  street soul, alternative R&B, neo-soul and lovers rock from the last 20 years and, in some cases, beyond!

The album is split into two halves: Disc One (Love) is focussed on artists who were active pre-2000, whilst Disc Two (Purpose) shines a light on newer artists who are carrying the torch for that previous generation. So, yes, a varied set and that variety is  reflected by the sources – the included artists hail from Manchester, London, Leeds, Cardiff and Sheffield.

Highlights? Well there are plenty and, for sure,  you’ll discover your own. Nostalgia buffs will be delighted to have 52nd Street’s 1986 classic ‘Tell Me’ again while there are more throwback sounds from Lynda Dawn (the quite lovely, ‘Roses’ here in its XL Middelton remix) and the more recent (2006) ‘Ghana Emotion’ from the ever dependable Omar (MBE, of course!). Right now we’re also enjoying the gentle, Lovers Rock-inflected ‘Hard Work’ from the Children of Zeus and ‘Dazzle You’ from Dazzle which kicks the album off in fine style. From there, right down to the closer, ‘Passport’ from Metabeats (feat Vanity Jay) you’ll enjoy classy and classic home grown soul and club sounds.

This lovely album’s not out till 16th August but you can learn more and pre-order @ http://www.firstwordrecords.com/
