‘Who That Girl Is’ is the debut EP from London soulstress GIGI HAROLD. However, working in tandem with her writing partner and bass player, Mark Harold, she prefers to work under the name “Gg”
Ms Harold says her influences include Billie Holiday, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Jill Scott and Amy Winehouse… an eclectic bunch for sure! And the three cuts on the EP reflect that eclecticism.
The title track is a lazy, jazz meander with a neo-soul undertow. There’s some sweet guitar work and some brief but lovely muted trumpet from guest player Kenny Wellington. Kenny’s horn is more prominent on the haunting ‘Through Winter’ while the building ‘Perfect Stranger’ reminds me of dear old Lisa Stansfield… though I can’t work out why! We believe that there’s a vinyl album on the way too.
