On Thursday, March 16 2023, the polymathic jazz saxophonist, composer, poet and rapper Soweto Kinch joins forces with the London Symphony Orchestra in the UK capital’s Printworks venue to perform White Juju, his acclaimed 72-minute tone poem. The multi-layered opus, recorded live at the Barbican in 2021 and released on an album last year, blends jazz improv with through-composed classic musical and hip-hop and is a socio-political meditation on “Broken Britain,” its themes ranging from the Covid pandemic and festering culture wars to racial discord and the grim legacy of the UK’s colonial past.
Promising to be a “unique event,” the performance aims to be a wholly immersive one thanks to the venue’s employment of sound and light installations. Accompanying the music will be a stunning visual presentation though sensitive viewers are advised that some of the imagery might be deemed disturbing.
