‘Where Is Christmas Now’ is the question posed on the latest Festive single to come our way. The question is set by multi-instrumentalist SANDRA MAE LUX.
Originally from Vancouver (Canada), Sandra has lived in south London since 2017. She has a degree in Jazz Studies and has performed with Robert Glasper and Herbie Hancock and opened for Dave Brubeck. She made her recording debut in 2020 with ‘Happily Ever After’ which was supported by people like Craig Charles and Gilles Peterson. All that experience shines through on her treatment of the self-penned ‘Where Is Christmas Now’.
Yes, the song is full of the usual Christmas clichés but the pairing of Sandra-Mae’s straight-from-the-heart vocals, and the gentle piano of UK jazz pianist Rob Barron delivers a naïve charm that has an attraction all of its own. Sweet and nostalgic? Yes, but a little different too and the cover (above) makes a lovely Christmas card.
