By common consent one of last year’s very best soul albums was ‘A Heart’s Journey’ from a new (ish) singer, ISHMALESINGS. 2022 saw a plethora of great LPs but his ‘A Heart’s Journey’ was right up there with the very best
The album track that first won all the attention was ‘Gimme Sum R&B’ – a sweet, nostalgia-laden tune . Then on release, we discovered a proper classic – the Marvin Gaye flavoured ‘What Can We Do’. This one had the lot … tight beats, a lovely sax solo, a layered vocal sound that echoed Gaye in his pomp and a message in the music!
Now the good news. Both those songs are with us again in new mixes. ‘Gimme Sum R&B’ comes in “jazz mix” – quite lovely and not really “jazz” … smooth jazz maybe? There’s a “jazz” mix too of ‘What Can We Do’. Again, not “jazz” in the genre-specific way, but just a little different to the original. For the soul conservatives there’s also a “no rap” mix of What Can We Do’ which omits the input from rhymster H2O-Flow.
