At the back end of last year we were mightily impressed by US soul man and sometime front man with Chairmen Of The Board, DARRYL JOHNSON. Backed by his band – the DETROIT-MEMPHIS EXPERIENCE – he offered us his version of the old Johnny Northern /Clyde Otis composition… ‘Anyone Can Tell (We’re In Love)’. It was a lovely old school thing…. sweet and smooth but not cloying.
Since then Darryl and the band have worked with Kathy Kosins and Paul Randolph and it’s Paul who’s at the helm of Mr J’s latest single ‘What You Do To Me’. It’s another old school soul tune that recalls the classic 60s sound of cities like Chicago and Detroit. Sweet harmonies, Hammond stabs, discreet vibes and Paul’s gritty vocal all conspire to create a lovely little tune which is good to go now on Maristar Records.
