WATTZ GOIN’ ON….

alt

BRANDON WATTZ is a US soul man who, though born in Germany, works in and around L.A having decanted there from Birmingham, Alabama. We first came across him via his excellent reading of the Spinners’ ‘Ghetto Child’ on Preston Glass’s ‘Love and Compassion’ collection.

Right now Mr W is busy promoting his own solo album ‘Feelin’ Some Kinda Way’ which was produced by the aforementioned Preston Glass. That name will tell you that the collection is a smooth and sophisticated soul set with plenty of old school flavours.

The set’s title track is a lazy, hazy groove with a hint of Howard Hewett about it. There’s more of the same on the catchy ‘Save Some Love For Me’ while ‘Man In The Middle’ is a superior slab of pop soul. Throughout Brandon is on great vocal form – witness to the fact the he cites his heroes as Sam Cooke, Johnnie Taylor, Nat King Cole and Eddie Kendricks.
