MARTHA AB is a new(ish) soulstress – hailing from and working in and around London. Clever girl, she’s currently studying for a degree in Jazz (she plays mean piano too!). Whilst working hard for that degree she’s found the time to make the odd record – debuting in 2020 with the drum and bass outing, ‘Wasting Time’. That was followed by the chiller that was ‘Loved In Love’ and now she all set to go with a third single…. ‘Wants And Needs’.
We’re told that the single is taken from Martha’s forthcoming long player, but which version will feature on the LP? You see ‘Wants And Needs’ comes at you as a multi mix package. The “original” is a sultry neo-soul meander with Ms AB’s vocal gliding easily over a laid-back backdrop. Then there’s a “Terminal 10” mix which takes us right into soulful house territory. The third tweak comes courtesy of “Lofty” (remember Chillfunk/East West Connection?). His “Honey Hill” tweak gives the song a jazzy vibe with some tasty George Benson style guitar licks. Finally, there’s the “JDN Beats” mix – downtempo and emotive. As ever, you pays your money….
Martha says: “Wants and Needs conveys my past attitudes towards relationships; indecision, waiting around for something, or someone, to happen. Not wanting to go into something unknown and new, I shied away from things for the fear of a bad outcome, it was easier to just dream. This manifested in me not taking agency in life and living in my comfort zone, therefore writing this piece, was a cathartic process which allowed me to move forward.” So now you know!
