VITAL VINYL!

Collectors of contemporary soul vinyl need to know that Colemine Records have just made available two unmissable 45s that are sure to be future classics.

The first comes from DURAND JONES and the INDICATIONS and it pairs two old songs (from the ‘Private Space’ LP) ‘Witchoo’ with ‘Love Will Work It Out’. You might remember that ‘Witchoo’ is  quirky and catchy and a little different to anything we’d heard from the band before. Synth-led, there’s a distinct disco flavour and it features the wonderful falsetto of drummer Aaron Fraser. ‘Love Will Work It Out’ also comes from the same ‘Private Space’ album and it’s  a soulful ballad. Both tracks have shared vinyl before but in a deal with Dead Oceans, Colemine are reissuing the 45 on midnight blue vinyl with revamped label art.

The second new Colemine 45 comes from KELLY FINNIGAN and brings together his ‘Leave You Alone’ with ‘Thom’s Hartbreak’. Both tracks were originally released on a mix tape and became available digitally in April. The former is a sweet, honeyed ballad, which, we’re told, was inspired by the wonderful music of Bettye Swann! The oddly spelt ‘Thom’s Hartbreak’ is another tribute – the clues in the title! This instrumental pays homage to the Philly sound crafted by, yes, Thom Bell and the Delfonics’ William Hart. No surprise than that it has a flavour of ‘La La La La Means I Love You’ . This limited edition 45 comes in fuchsia – nice!
