Don’t know too much about singer/songwriter JOEL SARAKULA save that he was born in Australia but now works out the UK. He describes his music as “soulful pop” – we might say “blue-eyed soul”. Assess that description via his latest single, a catchy little groove, ‘Tragic’.
We’re told that the song is about embarrassment, awkwardness, self-acceptance and the ability of being able to laugh at oneself… “‘your friends are laughing at the things that I’ve done, can’t take back the words I’ll admit that I’m dumb”
Sonically this ‘Tragic’ is easy on the ear – think Mamas Gun, Young Gun Silver Fox or even Boz Scaggs (remember him?) There’s a fashionable old school feel – analogue synths and a vibraphone. It’s a pleasant tune that makes few demands and comes with a thumbs up from us!
