The AM BAND were a 1980s UK outfit who described themselves as a “bunch of happy reprobates”. They were fronted by Andrew Wood Mitchell. Andrew is currently busy working on a new solo album – the follow up to his 2022 set ‘Merlin’s Bones’. The new set is to be called ‘Gyneth and the Quantum Space Thingy’, but he’s also re-working material from the AM Band. He’s remixing their first album ‘Less Is More’ (1989) from which they’ve just released a single, a re-polished and re-mixed ‘Dying By The Sword’.
A casual listen would suggest a Northern soul stomper – racing beats, parping brass, femme BVs, emotive vocals, the lot. But a glance at the title indicates something quite different – a complex lyric and story line (which you would expect from Andrew) which is something that Northern soul rarely offers.
The line up on the track is Austen Hornbrook on Guitar, Sam Kelly of Cymande fame on Drums, Neil McDougall on keys, Rami Ramon on Bass and Mr Wood Mitchell himself on lead vocals. Out now!
