The people at Premier League boutique soul label IZIPHO RECORDS are busy little bees. They’re all set to celebrate their 100th release with a rather fine example of modern/contemporary soul from California-based singer LAWRENCE BEAMEN. A little research though reveals that Mr B is a little more than just a “singer”. Various sites describe him as a songwriter, producer, psychologist and actor while his own web site adds that he also runs a modern textile company while he also does great work for various charities. With all that going down, thank goodness he still manages to find time for his music because Lawrence possesses a mighty fine bass-baritone voice soul voice which, it’s obvious, was reared in gospel music!
The A side of the new Izipho single is a super smooth and silkily soulful ‘Thinking Of You’ while The B side of the disc is a previously unreleased ‘Been A Long Time’ – another cut that ticks all the right boxes and allows the magnificence of the voice to shine through. Interestingly, Lawrence reached the 2009 finals of America’s Got Talent where he sang a Barry White song. And Big Bazza’s a goof reference point for Lawrence’s sound and style though there’s a Cunnie Williams’ thing going on too.
