Despite their name, THE HARLEM GOSPEL TRAVELERS aren’t exactly from Harlem! For sure, they’re a gospel group but the band hail from different parts of New York. They did however come together in Harlem to work under the auspices of blue-eyed soul star Eli “Paperboy” Reed.
Originally a quartet, the group debuted on Colemine Records with ‘He’s On Time’ and now working as trio (Thomas Gatling, George Marage and Dennis Bailey), they’re preparing a follow up album, ‘Look Up!’ which is due late August/September.
In the meantime, Colemine have released the LP’s title track as a single and it really is a proper soulful affair. The young trio trade vocals in best harmony group fashion. The rhythm is energetic, the song is infectious in its optimism and it’s just a joyful thing which will appeal to non-believers as well as the gospel fraternity!
The song was written by Aaron Frazer from Durand Jones and the Indications and Paperboy Reed. That in itself is a guarantee of old school soul quality. Out now and recommended!
