SUNSET PLACE are an indie band from Sydney whose music would be easy to superficially label “yacht rock” or even “blue-eyed soul”. But the music that the quartet peddle is much more complex than either of those almost twin genres. There is depth and a dynamism in what they offer and in places their music can be disturbing.
Hear the band at their best on their new single, ‘No Matter What’, a song that explores the complexities of anxiety and trauma. They call it a “portrait of anxiety”. See what I meant about “disturbing”? Sonically there are elements of soul, jazz, rock, and folk in an odd cocktail. It is a unique sound with a remarkable and powerful vocal from Jess Smallwood. If you like your music a little more than left field, you may want to investigate. Out August 12th
