‘The Secret Drawer’ is the mysterious title of a new single from jazz maestro BOB JAMES. James co-wrote the tune with Rachel Kwag, a fellow composer/arranger whom he describes as his “creative consultant. James adds: “She’s a very experienced professor at a music school in South Korea, where I first met her, and she became a very close friend”.
Sonically, ‘The Secret Drawer’ is classic Bob James. It delivers a memorable melody underpinned by a solid groove overridden by punchy brass and crystalline keys.
We’re told that ‘The Secret Drawer’ heralds a new album – ‘Jazz Hands’, due September 15th on digital, SACD- Hybrid Stereo, MQA-CD and 180g vinyl LP (in Solid Blue and Black colors- out on September 22nd 2023) via evosound.
Further, we’re informed that the LP will be a lot more adventurous than ‘The Secret Drawer’ indicates. Produced by Bob with his manager Sonny Abelardo, the ten-track album was mostly recorded during the months of the Covid pandemic and features James in a number of different musical settings. It also features a cameo from CeeLo Green on the title track and includes production input from the hip-hop turntablist DJ Jazzy Jeff. Let’s wait and see. In the meantime, ‘The Secret Drawer’ is good to go now!
