It’s always been one of dear Curtis Mayfield’s most enduring love songs, ‘The Makings Of You’. It’s been covered countless times – most notably by Aretha, Gladys Knight and Syleena Johnson. Now we can add yet another version of this timeless love song, from SOUL SUGAR.
We’ve featured Soul Sugar here before. But to remind you the “band” is a French soul-jazz collective led by organist GUILLAUME METENIER. Based in Montmartre, he’s one Europe’s most in-demand keyboard players. Indeed his passion for old keyboard instruments, chiefly the Hammond B3, inspired his band’s name. ‘Soul Sugar’ is a classic 1969 Jimmy McGriff LP!
More recently Guillaume and his team have veered towards reggae and his version of ‘The Makings Of You’ is indeed a reggae flavoured take . It’s languid and rootsy and with a different feel to the versions we already know and love. Vocalist on this one is Leo Carmichael.
The track, released today, February 23rd via Gee Recordings, is taken from the upcoming new album ‘Just A Little Talk’ scheduled for release on March 15th 2024.
