Nashville is rightly known as the capital of country music, but the city also boasts a strong soul contingent and helping keep that soul flag flying is independent funk/rock/retro soul 4-piece MUTUAL GROOVE. (above)
The band tell us that they have a plethora of influences… people like Sly & The Family Stone, Parliament, Kool & The Gang, Vulfpeck, Red Hot Chili Peppers, , James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Average White Band, Tower of Power, The Meters and many more and you can hear flavours of all those outfits and many more on the band’s two singles which are currently doing the rounds.
First up there’s a slinky, bassy ‘Started Livin’’ then a livelier, funkier ‘Tough Get Goin’. Both features parping brass, tight rhythms and convincing vocals from Joel Forlines and being Nashville born and bred there’s a real roughhewn, southern flavoured to proceedings.
For the record the band’s line up is David Martin – Drums, Pat Graves – Bass, Ryan Swinehart – Sax, Sam Woods – Guitar and Joel Forlines – Featured Vocalist and they’ve been together since 2107. Find out more @ http://mutualgroove.com/
