The latest release from Philly retro label, SOCIETY HILL RECORDS features SHIRLEY LITES who for many years led Billy Paul’s band and sang his BVs. As a solo singer she’s probably best remembered for fronting the Lenny Fontana house cut, ‘Fire’.
For her Society Hill debut, Ms. L has selected something very, very different. She debuts on the Butch Ingram imprint with a moody and dramatic rendition of the Stevie Wonder song, ‘Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers’. The song is best known in the Syreeta version though rock guitarist Jeff Beck also released it.
Shirley handles the song with sensitivity and its drama and depth is a far cry from what we’ve come to expect from Society Hill. Out now!
