The Trade Martin-penned song, ‘Take Me For A Little While’ is regarded as a pop/soul classic. The original version (produced by Chip Taylor and Al Gorgoni) was released by Evie Sands in July 1965 and since then it’s been covered countless times – notably by Chess diva Jackie Ross, soul superstar Patti LaBelle (fronting the Bluebelles) and by numerous beat groups including Scouse wannabees, the Koobas.
Latest artist to tempt us with a version of ‘Take Me For A Little While’ is Chicago’s enigmatic RUDY DE ANDA (you may remember his quirky ‘Closet Botanist album from last year). We’re told that Rudy’s version is based (loosely) on the Royal Jesters’ 1967 cover. It leads off with moody organ and the lyric’s sung in Spanish and English – rough and with a garage flavour, it’s a good take on a classic.
The release’s putative B side is an original song, ‘83’ – it’s sombre, moody and intriguing with a definite 70s flavour. Like ‘Take Me For A Little While’, it has its own-fi charm.
