Portland trumpeter Farnell Newton is a key part of that city’s vibrant music scene. Amongst his many projects is a band that goes by the name BRIDGE CITY REVIVAL. Farnell is a core member of the group which also features drummer Tyrone Hendrix, guitarist Gus Berry and bassist and keyboardist Michael Elson. At various time the Bridge City team use various guests to deliver their take on old school, good old fashioned analogue soul. Those guests number singer Ural Thomas, Motown drummer Mel Brown, backing vocalist Saeeda Wright, vocalist Ronnie Wright and Arietta Ward.
And it’s Ms Ward who fronts the band’s latest single – a delicious slice of authentic retro soul, ‘Lucky Me’. Arietta delivers a powerful vocal over a classic 60s soul backdrop – chinking guitar riffs, rolling horns and tight rhythms. It’s delightful and if you’re into the whole Daptone scene and the work of bands like Durand Jones and the Indications, Bridge City Revival’s ‘Lucky Me’ comes highly recommended.
