Discerning soul fans will know all about KELLY FINNIGAN. The Californian drummer/vocalist is the son of a top session keyboardist and he’s worked with bands like the hip hop collective Destruments (he was the drummer) and more notably Bay Area funk band the Monophonics. Kelly also works as a soloist and his own ‘The Tales People Tell’ album was very well received while his 2020 long player, ‘A Joyous Sound’ offered a different spin on the Christmas album. Both are worth searching out.
One of the highlights on ‘The Tales People Tell’ set was a wonderful uptown soul harmony ballad, ‘Impressions Of You” (the clue to the sound is the title!). For his latest release Kelly has decided to revisit that song by issuing it in an acoustic version which really highlights Kelly’s moving vocals. It’s perfect for the Valentines market.
The original has become a much loved staple of the US West Coast lowrider scene and this new take is all to set to emulate it.
