SUPER STAR?

Latest release from vinyl specialist MILES AWAY RECORDS offers a real rarity… RUTH WATERS’ version of ‘Super Star’. A classic “groupie” song, it was written by Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett and it’s been recorded countless times, most notably by the Carpenters and Luther Vandross.

Texan singer RUTH “SILKY” WATERS is maybe best known for a couple of two unashamed, John Davis produced disco albums, ‘Never Gonna Be The Same’ and ‘Out in the Open’. However, it appears that before those she cut a version of ‘Super Star’ supported by the State Of Mind Showband’. It was released on the tiny KMBA label and even Discogs can only suggest that release was sometime in the “late 70s”.

Ruth’s ‘Super Star’ is a big production with wah wah guitars, synths  and a pacey beat. Vocally, Ms Waters’ delivery , in places, recalls Esther Phillips, but it’s also evident that she has a gospel background.

In best 70s tradition the Miles Away reissue features  ‘Super Star part 2’ on the flip. This one really takes off with cosmic synth lines and crazy guitar effects. Learn more @ https://www.milesawayrecords.co.uk/
