We don’t usually feature rap and/or hip-hop here @SJF but right now we’re quite taken by a new tune, ‘Sunset Flicks’ from self-styled “music curator, all round storyteller and lover of many musical soundscapes”, ODARIO.
Odario is a Guyanese born performer who resides in Toronto. Apart from his solo work he fronted his own hip-hop band, Grand Analog, who debuted in 2007 with the album ‘Calligraffiti’. Now, it seems, Mr O’s out on his own and his ‘Sunset Flicks’ is winning plenty of support. It’s a very 90s sound (think Guru) and has a soulful/gospel feel. The track features Adrian X on bluesy, drifty guitar and Lala Noel on ambient, gospel-esque vocals.
We’re told that the song was Inspired by “the summer’s lofty soft air and warm breezy hugs, after long dark winter episodes”. Odario adds that “’Sunset Flicks’ is about rollin’ through town with a loved one and getting reacquainted with your city. This song plays out as an appreciation song to that very person (your Cocoa Love Bug) that supported you through the darkest hours. ‘Sunset Flicks’ is also a tribute to that golden magic hour. Those short few minutes when the sun sits low and perfect. Many of us agree that very moment in time, the magic hour, is the best time to capture a memory and snap a few sunset flicks”. Now you know!
Yes, this one’s hip hop but without being able to fully explain, ‘Sunset Flicks; sort of works on many levels. If your soul’s broad minded, do check it. Out now via The Confidence Emperors label.
