It’s cold, its wet, it’s pretty miserable in the UK now that autumn’s kicked in. Maybe you’re still longing for those warm, continental summer nights? If so, then young Portuguese singer/songwriter MAYA BLANDY might help take you there – in your imagination at least!
You may remember Maya’s ‘Lemon’ from earlier this year but her new one ‘À luz da Lua’ Is a whole lot gentler … sensual even, conjuring up those welcome images of late night beach strolls with your significant other.
Sonically it’s a mix of soul-lite and Latin vibes. The lyric’s sung in Portuguese and the story goes that producer and song-writer Jake Wherry (founding member of the pioneering hip-hop band The Herbaliser) wrote the music with its catchy guitar hook for another Brazilian artist back in 2019 after going on a trip with his sons to Ibiza – it was inspired by the sunset at Benirras beach.
In 2024 Maya heard the hook and fell in love with its feel. Thus, Jake and Maya proceeded to rebuild a whole new song around it with the added Portuguese element. Maya drew on her up-bringing on the small island of Madeira to write about her romantic adventures by the ocean. Oh, and we think. ‘À luz da Lua’ means “by the light of the moon”- we’d say “moonlight”. Out now!
