MIDDLE NAME DANCE BAND is an Australian trio comprising of Sampology (muso Sam Poggiolo) KUZCO (a Māori musician ) and Sam Stosuur.
They came together in 2018 as Middle Name Dance and released a collaborative EP reflecting the sounds of Brisbane underground music scene – specifically what they called “the cross-pollination between the club and jazz/soul communities” The 5-track EP gained the attention of specialist radio hosts like Gilles Peterson. In 2020 they released a further EP which they now follow up with a single, ‘Baby, Got A Light’.
It’s an unusual, deceptively simple sound featuring a sultry synth melody with a counter melody played by the trumpet. I guess the single’s artwork (above) gives some indication of the esoteric nature of the music. It’s available digitally via Middle Name Records.
