‘Structures’ is the latest album from THE PARK AVENUE EXPERIENCE, an Italian a jazz trio marshalled by FABIO PUGLISI of SOUL BASEMENT fame. The trio is a sort of a side hustle for Fabio but that doesn’t mean that he lavishes any less passion on it than he always offers with the Basement project. That was evident on the Park Avenue Experience’s debut album. 2020’s ‘Life Span’. That long player offered a variety of instrumental moods – notably classy melodic jazz (but no way bland) with a soulful and (in places) funky undertow.
The new 10 tracker that is ‘Structures’ delivers more of the same. The album opens with a bass-led ‘Time Past’ which as it develops might remind you of Bob James in his pomp. The closer is a late night, gentle ‘Lift Your Gaze’ which features Fabio’s crystalline piano. In between there’s plenty to enjoy. ‘Lexington Blues’, for instance, is a seriously jazzy, improvisational groove; ‘A Brand New Dream’ (the title offers a clue) could sit comfortably on a chill out collection; ‘Rose Petal Blues’ mines a similar vein while ‘Jelly City’ rolls out a vibe as intriguing at its title.
So yes, ‘Structures’ presents plenty of treasures for followers of melodic jazz; those who appreciate the good groove and consummate musicianship. The album’s out now via Jinurock Entertainment.
