‘One Step (After Another)’ is the classy debut single from MISS DISCO, a premier disco revue band that in the past ten years has graced the stages of Glastonbury and Heritage Live and lit up festivals around the country performing an infectious repertoire of classic mirrorball hits.
The single came about after veteran producer/songwriter and former Radio Luxembourg DJ Mark Wesley saw the eight-piece band live, was bowled over by their performance, and offered them ‘One Step (After Another),’ a song he had demoed in 1976 with a full orchestra only to see it rejected by UK record companies then trying to cash in on punk rock mania ignited by the Sex Pistols.
Says Wesley: “It seemed such a blindingly obvious idea, it’s a wonder I didn’t think of it before. My song has the provenance of an original disco track written and produced for those times, so this has given Miss Disco the opportunity to record an original song that came authentically from the seventies to fit seamlessly into their setlist. And of course, it’s a song they can call their own.”
“As a busy live band, we’d never stopped to consider the possibility of becoming recording artists,” confesses the record’s producer and the band’s keyboard maven, Marc Rapson (aka Marcus Tinkler). “The whole experience has been fantastic.”
Fronted by the soulful vocals of Sue Darwar (aka Susan Pinky), the track is a pulsating retro-tinged number garnished with punchy horns and lush strings underpinned by a throbbing bass-driven groove. Says Darwar: “We kept the melody from the original demo exactly the same, but we changed the music to better suit how we naturally sound as a live band, so we weren’t entirely sure how Mark would react to what we’d come up with. Thankfully, he loved it and, as a producer himself, suggested a couple of great ideas which proved to be the icing on the cake.”
‘One Step (After Another)’ will be released to download and stream on 18th October
