Back in 2013 (yep, that far back) Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ was absolutely everywhere and it’s never really gone away! The tune’s been covered a number of times already – most offering a quirky take on the familiar.
Latest outfit to have a stab at ‘Happy’ are the SO MUCH SOUL PLAYERS. They’re essentially London based producer Chris Read and in demand pianist Rob Barron. For this ‘Happy’ though, Barron takes to the Hammond – hence the full title – ‘Happy (Hammond)’. That familiar swelling organ sound gives this take a sort of Soul-Jazz feel – but only “sort of”, ‘cos the whole thing is driven along by some bonkers drumming. It’s raw and infectious and factor in the tune’s familiarity and you have something rather tasty! It’s out now on Dinked Records.
