The revitalised Stax label kicks off its 2009 with some exciting releases – old and new. First off there’s a brace of ISAAC HAYES’ reissues – ‘Black Moses’ and ‘Disco Freak’. ‘Black Moses’ was originally released in 1971 – the high watermark of HAYES’ musical career and the new issue comes fully remastered and with extensive liner notes from ROB BOWMAN… but will the CD pack be able to recreate that magical, fold out, cross-shaped sleeve? ‘Disco Freak’ dates from 1976 and was originally released on HAYES’ own label Hot Buttered Soul which was distributed via ABC; this is the album’s first full CD release. Keeping it brand new now, Stax stalwart STEVE CROPPER joins with (YOUNG) RASCALS main man FELIX CAVALIERE to release ‘Nudge It Up A Notch’ – a refreshing 12 track collection recorded down in Nashville where both CROPPER and CAVALIERE now reside. All three albums are released at the end of March.
