SOUL NIGHTMARE!

Followers of the rarer end of the indie soul scene will know about svelte-voiced DARRYL JOHNSON. For some time, he’s been working with the latest incarnation of the Chairmen of the Board, but he’s confident enough to pursue a solo career too.

In 2018 we enjoyed his version of the old Johnny Northern /Clyde Otis composition… ‘Anyone Can Tell (We’re In Love)’ on which he was backed by his band the DETROIT-MEMPHIS EXPERIENCE.

Then last year he hooked up with Kathy Kosins and Paul Randolph and it was Randolph who helmed his lovely throwback single ‘What You Do To Me’.

Now Darryl’s back with another delightful single, ‘Nightmare’. Again, it boasts a distinct old school vibe with just a touch of the Bobby Womack’s about it – though the vocal isn’t quite as gritty as dear old Bobby’s. The cut features a weaving sax line, and the lyric namechecks a certain Otis Redding which should give you more clues about the sound. A nightmare that’s not a nightmare, if you see what I mean. Out now!
