UK soul social media sites are awash with references to a BBC TV cookery programme…. Nigella Lawson’s innuendo-stuffed ‘Cook Eat Repeat’. It’s not so much the food or Ms L’s posing and pouting that’s causing the interest but the fabulous soul-based soundtrack!
Dear Nigella tells us that she takes no part in the music selection. That’s left to the production team and what a great job they do! Over the course of the series so far, we’ve enjoyed stuff like the Staple Singers’ ‘I’ll Take You There’, Bettye Swann’s ‘Make Me Yours’, Jackie Wilson’s ‘Sweetest Feeling’ and plenty of vintage Motown – tunes like ‘For Once In My Life’, ‘Take Me In Your Arms’, ‘I’ I Hear A Symphony’ and ‘This Old Heart of Mine’. Interestingly the producers often choose to use the Funk Brothers’ backing tracks rather than the vocal versions.
It all makes for a decent watch – or rather listen! The music is sure tasty; the food looks half decent, but you’ll need to make up your own minds about Ms Lawson!
The shows airs on BBC 2 every Monday at 8 PM
