Spot the deliberate mistake! Just last week we posted that boutique label LRK RECORDS were releasing their last single of 2023 – a double A sider from BRIAN SCARTOCCI. Well the little tinkers at LRK have decided to slip in another tasty single before year end – it’s a feisty and fierce ‘Soul Clap’ from BELLA BROWN AND THE JEALOUS LOVERS. The caveat though is that the new one is, at the moment, a digital release.
You’ll remember that Bella (real name Carol Hatchett) and her big band hail from Los Angeles and that they’ve released a couple of EPs that made considerable waves on the US funk scene. The music on the mini albums included covers of things like ‘I Can’t Get Next To You’ and ‘Groove Me’ and some tough originals. LRK have already issued four Bella B cuts. Tunes like ‘Get Mine’, ‘Bang , ‘Bang’ and the more sombre, ‘I’m Gone’ were feisty hybrids of Sharon Jones and Tina Turner with a garnish of people like Marva Whitney and Lyn Collins!
Bella’s ‘Soul Clap’ (no relation to the Booker T tune by the way) is a big, percussive outing and the precursor to the forthcoming LP of the same name. The track is a proper brassy stomper in the manner of, say, Bohannon – with a tough funk undertow. The LRK team tell us that the cut is “a joyous expression of humanity!” Bob on!
‘Soul Clap’ will be available digitally from November 17th via your usual streaming/download platform and don’t forget there’s an album en route! Learn more @ https://lrkrecords.bandcamp.com/
