SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

It’s been an exciting time for the in-demand New York-born, Tamil Nadu-raised singer extraordinaire and multi-instrumentalist Ganavya, who released her acclaimed album Like The Sky I’ve Been Quiet on Shabaka Hutchings’ Native Rebel label in March. Since then, the singer who melds Indian classical and folk music with spiritual jazz and electronica has appeared on Later With Jools Holland, guested with the British band Sault to great acclaim, and played a series of lauded sold-out solo shows at London’s St. Pancras Church. More recently, she performed at the Love Supreme festival. Now, Ganavya has released a new single called ‘Draw Something Beautiful’ (aka ‘ami pana so’dras’), a collaboration with Nils Frahm for the German electronic composer’s Leiter label.

A haunting ethereal soundscape where Ganavya’s spellbinding vocals waft over Frahm’s minimalist but highly atmospheric electronics, ‘Draw Something Beautiful’ is a new recording of one of the singer’s oldest songs. Reveals the singer: “I wrote it as a child to say, ‘If I die, could you take the life force in me and redistribute it among the remaining humans to make them happier?’ I genuinely believed this was possible because of the stories and mythology I grew up with.” She adds: “This might be the first time in my life I’m releasing something of mine that I feel fully connected to. I feel like – finally – I can make the music I want to. The second I started speaking to Leiter, I felt like my bones could rest. The greatest gift that they have already given me is that I now believe a bearable, perhaps even beautiful future is possible.”
