Never mind ‘Just Eat!’, good ‘ole SNOOP DOGG is back to making his own music. Not that he needs to, rumours suggest he was pad $5 million for the food delivery ad! Whatever, our man has just released a new album, ‘Snoop Dogg Presents Death Row Summer 2022’. Essentially the collection is a compilation that features a diverse group of musicians and singers – people like Miguel, Raphael Saadiq, The Eastsidaz, Tha Dogg Pound, Butch Cassidy, Jane Handcock, October London, Stokely, Minnie Merda, Latoiya Williams, Champ Medici and Butch Cassidy.
The album is the second from Death Row Records since Snoop acquired it and , of course, it’s top heavy with hip-hop – albeit our man’s idiosyncratic take on the genre. However plenty of serious soul folk are finding plenty of decent soul cuts on the 15 tracker and you may have already heard some of ’em on soul radio.
One tune that is getting plenty of soul airplay is ‘Mulholland Drive’ which features October London and Latoiya Williams. There’s a definite Marvin Gaye feel to this one. ‘Wait A Minute Baby’ has a feel of Marvin too – or more specifically his work with the Originals. Another potential big soul tune is the quite lovely ‘Everybody Watching’ with Miguel and Raphael Saadiq out front. The album also includes last September’s ‘Verbalize’ which stars Stokely… still sounds good!
Snoop says: “I brought together all my homies to create a perfect Summer album that has something for everyone on it. I promised ya’ll when I got back Death Row Records, I was gonna bring the brand to the next level … and this album is a beautiful project celebrating the true spirit of Death Row. Look forward to hearing what ya’ll think.” Thanks again to “Soul Strutter”, Mark Turner for sourcing this…. https://soulstrutter.blogspot.com/
