SMOKEY: NEW ALBUM…

Soul legend, SMOKEY ROBINSON has just released a new album, ‘Gasms’, his first LP of original material since 2009’s ‘Time Flies When You’re Having Fun’ and the good news is that despite his age (he’s  83!), Smokey’s voice is still in fine fettle – still  one of the most beautiful , sensitive and unique instruments in modern popular music.

‘Gasms’ is a nine track set with seven of the songs being self-penned. The title track is a one of the non-Smokey songs but it’s a real stunner (listing all kinds of “gasms”). It opens the album and sets the tone for what’s to come. Essentially the album is a “Quiet Storm” set (and why not… Smokey invented the genre after all!)  with the only really robust item being the closing track ‘I Fit in There’ which has a real Norman Whitfield feel  to the production (shades of ‘Grapevine’).

‘Gasms’ is a  class album throughout  – proving experience will always out. We’re told that the set has been six years in making and our man explains what it’s all about. Smokey says: “When people think of gasms, they think of orgasms first and foremost … I tell everybody: ‘Whatever your gasm is, that’s exactly what I’m talking about.”… now we know!
