Hard to believe, maybe, but our above headline is spot on. Yes, Motown icon SMOKEY ROBINSON has a song currently scaling the US country charts. Tune in question is a soulful, power ballad, ‘I Lied’ that Smokey penned with jazz keyboardist DAVID GARFIELD…. pictured together above (see our recent news item about David).
‘I Lied’ is the second song that Smokey and David have collaborated on. Soul anoraks may remember that the pair was responsible for ‘One Like You’ which George Benson recorded on his 2009 album ‘Songs And Stories’. (Garfield was… indeed is Benson’s MD and he also performed on Smokey’s ‘Time Flies When You’re Having Fun’ long player.)
Sadly the Motown legend doesn’t take to the mic on ‘I Lied’. That honour goes to rising country singer J Paris and she offers a blue-eyed soul twist to the obviously country flavoured treatment.
We’re told that the track will feature on David Garfield’s next album, ‘Vox Outside The Box’ – a set of the keyboardist’s collaborations with jazz, R&B, rock and pop luminaries and the follow up to his recent ‘Jazz Outside the Box’ (once again, see recent news item).
