Vinyl collectors and general soul junkies need to know that those awfully nice people over at Ace have just issued a whole clutch of lovely little seven inch 45s. The group’s Kent imprint has seven discs out and as you can probably guess they all have a Northern bias and feature tracks that are as rare as any of the clichéd metaphors that lesser publications use. All good solid soul, of course, but of particular note is ‘Watcha Gonna Do’ from Goldwax’s PHILLIP AND THE FAITHFULLS – a great mid-tempo item, as is the better-known ‘Come Out Of The Sandbox’ from MARY LOVE while for those who measure things by their monetary value there’s JESSE DAVIES’ ‘Hang On In There Girl’. We’re told that original copies currently fetch over a grand! Over at Ace’s BGP label there’s a quintet of funkier vinyl – all rare and desirable… most notably ROOSEVELT MATTHEWS’ version of ‘Tighten Up’. For a long time this have been bootlegged as ‘Tighten Up Tighter’. Other featured artists include BILLY GARNER, THE ETERNAL FLAMES and BRENDA GEORGE. All releases are in limited editions – so grab ’em while you can… more details – www.acerecords.com
