SINGULARLY SOULFUL…

There’s been plenty of decent soul released over the last month or so – here’s a few we’ve highlighted that might have passed you by …

CARLA PRATHER  – ‘Back In the Day’.  Ms Prather is best known for her vocals on countless house anthems but this latest offering is a lovely contemporary soul groove with that extra special nostalgic attraction. We know that the soul crowed love these kind of litany records – you know. where beloved artists are name checked and lionised. This one, on which Carla proves her soul credentials, lists all the greats and you have to give the writer props for rhyming Marvin Gaye with Sade and Christmas Day with Donny Hathaway! Recommended!

THE GABRIELS – ‘Glory’. You probably know by now that the Gabriels (fronted by the Jacob Lusk) are an  emotional gospel-inspired trio whose music offers wider appeal. Their new ‘Glory’ is a real barnstormer – old  school testifying for the 21st century! The band are currently on a  UK with dates throughout the country – including a show at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club!

LEE FIELDS – You Can Count On Me’. Veteran soul man Lee Fields (above) has been rather prolific lately. His album ‘Sentimental Fool’ was well received. Then came the single, ‘Waiting On The Sidelines’ and now that single’s putative B side has just won release via Daptone. It’s a joyous and jaunty retro sound, ‘You Can Count On Me’ . This is worth searching out as it was only previously available on a limited edition 2022 EP.

ALANNA ROYALE – ‘Run Around’. Despite the name Alanna Royale is a Memphis-based  group  fronted by the smooth, soulful tones of Alanna Quinn-Broadus. She’s supported  by guitarist Jared Colby and bassist Gabriel Golden who themselves are supported by a revolving crew of musicians. They impressed last year with the Kelly Finnegan produced ‘Fall In Love Again’ – a gorgeous slice of soft soul. Their new ‘Run Around’ is a tougher sound that’s starting to win airplays. Out now
