BRIAN HURST’S formidable listening site, www.soulandjazz.com continues to champion the kind of music that we here @ www.soulandjazzandfunk.com (yes, no relation!) promote too.
From time to time Mr H issues compilation albums and ‘THE HURST SELECTION Volume 3′ is just out and the range of music on the 12 tracker is, as you’d imagine, as eclectic and varied as the web site’s output. So, expect edgy, contemporary soul like Rod Harris’ Jr’s ‘How It Feels’ with input from Musiq Soulchild and Lilian Kane’s ‘Separate Lives’ alongside cool jazz cuts like Primo and the Groupe’s ‘Can I Change’. Pamela Samiha Wise’s ‘Negre Con Leche (The Bomba)’ will keep the Latin fans happy while those who love mellow vintage will relish the opportunity to hear Grant Green Jr’s ‘Central Park Groove’ … great to hear him keeping his father’s jazz-soul legacy alive.
From our point of view, we’re loving the Sunlight Square remix of Lindsey Webster’s ‘I’m Strong’. The tune was the best of the up-tempo material on her lovely 2015 LP ‘You Change’ (find review in our archive) and here the Squares take to cut into soulful house territory but keep the lovely understated vocal.
