QUENTIN MOORE is a hard-working soul man from Austin, Texas. Despite his youth, his musical mission statement is to keep old school soul alive and to that end the self-styled “last Mohican of Southern soul” has released two enthusiastic albums that despite the rough edges were both welcomed by soul buffs who still revere “the real thing”.
For the last couple of years, it’s been Quentin’s practise to release a special Valentine’s Day EP and though our copy of this year’s edition arrived after 14th February, it’s still worth seeking out for those who are romantically inclined. Even if romance isn’t on your menu, you could do worse than investigate simply to reassure yourself that proper, old school, organic soul music is still being made!
Highlight of the ‘Vday EP Volume 2’ is a fab cover of Bobby Womack’s ‘That’s The Way I Feel About Cha’. Quentin, as you’d expect, treats the classic with utmost respect and does a great job. ‘Take My Hand’ is another goodie – a Southern-flavoured item with clever lyrics that draw on the world of business and commerce. Try “I’ll pay you time and a half to be a partner in your firm!”
‘I’m Gonna Get You’ is a winner too – a hint of Womack about it; ‘She Did It To Me’ features some pleasing acoustic guitar; while ‘Wouldn’t Give Us Up’ is a catchy mid-tempo groove that sums up where the “last Mohican of Southern soul” is coming from
