Don’t know too much about Dutch soul man STEFFEN MORRISON, save that his people describe him as “Marvin Gaye and James Brown rolled into one”! Even taking into account PR hyperbole, that’s a wee bit too much, but young Steffen sure has potential as evidenced on his new album, ‘Soul Revolution’.
He says that the long player represents his musical journey, seeing him searching for the pieces that made him into the man he is today. With that in mind, I guess the focus cuts have to be ‘Where I Wanna Be’ and ‘True To Myself’ – both well sung, decent soul tunes. ‘Positivity’ offers more lyrical introspection/advice married to a catchy modern soul vibe while the album’s brass filled title cut is tougher with a funk undertow.
