For those who like a good read, Bloomsbury Books have just published a novel, ‘RARE SINGLES’ by BENJAMIN MYERS. which just might appeal to soul lovers.
The novel tells the story of a washed up US soul singer, Earlon “Bucky” Bronco – now in his 70s. He never enjoyed much success – but, of course, some of his singles became big on the Northern soul scene. Thus, he’s invited over to the UK to play at a Northern soul festival. The bemused Bronco pitches up at Leeds/Bradford airport where he’s met by Northern souler Dinah who’s to be his host. Poor Dinah’s in a dead end job and is less than enthusiastic about her ne’er do well husband. Bucky and Dinah strike up a friendship which blossoms as the story progresses. En route we learn about both characters’ back stories and from current reviews it seems that the novel really does catch the Northern vibe.
