Funk meister GEORGE CLINTON will issue his latest album in September and by all reports the LP is a wonderful return to the funkster’s first steps in the music business. Those with long memories will know that CLINTON began his career with soul harmony vocal group THE PARLIAMENTS whose ‘I Wanna Testify’ and ‘I Can Feel The Ice Melting’ rival anything by the acknowledged super groups. Since those heady 60s days GEORGE’S career path twisted and turned in all kinds of weird and very wonderful directions, but now he’s going back to his roots. “I’ve been waiting for years to do this record. I knew that real funk would come back. I knew that Motown would come back… and I knew eventually doo-wop would come back. I just felt I should be the one to usher it back in!” enthused GEORGE. The new album’s called ‘Radio Friendly’ and along with some new songs, it features covers of classics like ‘Pledging My Love’, ‘Ain’t That Peculiar’ and ‘Never, Never Gonna Give You Up’. What’s more the man’s roped in a stellar line up of musicians to help him out. Dubbed ‘The Gangsters Of Love’, they include SLY STONE, CARLOS SANTANA, THE RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS, EL DEBARGE and gospel star KIM BURRELL. Label for the release is Shanachie and there will be a full review on www.soulandjazzandfunk.com very soon.
