‘PLEASE MR DISC JOCKEY ‘is the latest compilation from archive specialists Fantastic Voyage. The three CD, 90 track collection features vocal group recordings from 1951 – 1962, all released on the legendary Atlantic label (and its various subsidiaries).
The album boasts many big names… amongst them the Clovers, the Coasters and the Drifters. Amongst the Drifters selections there’s ‘There Goes My Baby’ – a cut many believe to be the first true soul group recording (fans of the Impressions ‘For Your Precious Love’ might take issue though) while included in the Coasters cuts you can enjoy ‘Searchin” and ‘Ain’t That Just Like Me’ – two songs that were staples in every 60s beat group’s repertoire.
Amongst the lesser know outfits there’s the Cardinals, the Sensations, the Ray-O-Vacs, the Chordcats, the Royal Jokers and the Superiors. Interestingly there are three tunes from the Isley Brothers too – including their version of ‘Twist And Shout’ – the version that inspired the Beatles. Maybe more interestingly the Isleys’ recording of the song is preceded here by the original “original” version from the Top Notes…. just one of the many idiosyncrasies that collections like this throw up.
