This last month’s been a good one for lovers of cover versions. Latest soul classic to win a 2023 makeover is Sylvia Robinson’s ‘Pillow Talk.’. The new take on the bedtime beauty comes from Maryland soulstress TYGRESSA (Jones). You might remember that Tygressa broke into the business after she won two victories at the famed Apollo Amateur Night. She then went on the road with Natalie Cole tribute shows. So little wonder that her debut EP featured a cover of Ms Cole’s ‘Touch Me’.
Her ’ Thought I Needed You’ (which cleverly sampled Brenda Russell’s ‘If Only For One Night’(most famously covered by dear Luther, of course) also won plenty of plaudits and this new ‘Pillow Talk ‘ will further her career even more. It’s a sweet version with pleasing Bacharach brass fills. It’s out May 3rd.
