Though she’ll be a new(ish) name to most, Detroit’s PENNY WELLS has been on the scene since the early noughties. Her 2011 album of Bacharach songs was critically acclaimed.
For her latest single, Ms Wells has teamed up with another musical giant – maybe not as well-known as good ‘ole Burt, but to soul fans, Frank McComb is right up there. This new Wells/McComb collaboration is a sweet and gentle ‘I Wanna Be More’.
The song’s message proffers the hope that somehow we can become “better” versions of ourselves and Penny delivers with soulful conviction betraying her gospel background and experiences in the jazz field. McComb is the producer, arranger and plays all the instruments and the duo make a great team, crafting a super slice of proper grown up soul music. Out now
