PARTY FOR ONE….

Want some good news to cheer up a miserable January? OK – well, here we go … top UK blue-eyed soul band MAMAS GUN are gearing up to release a new album, enigmatically titled ‘Cure The Jones’.

The long player is pencilled in for an April release – but in the meantime we can enjoy the set’s first single – a delightful double A sider that pairs ‘Party For One’ with ‘Looking For Moses’.

‘Party For One’ is a dreamy and lush meander (shades of Marvin Gaye) which  beautifully highlights the Gun’s main man Andy Platts’ fragile falsetto. Subtle brass shadings and gentle percussion add to the eclectic atmosphere creating a warm, wrap around sound. Platts says: “Lyrically Party For One comes from me being a bit of a loner – I like my own company and space to create, think and reflect. I was in my ideal world during the early stages of the pandemic, on my own and with no one around, but I was mourning the company of strangers. There is something in anonymous togetherness that is the stuff of life.”

‘Looking For Moses’ is different again – loose and funky, it owes its inception to dear old Bill Withers. Platts again: “Looking For Moses was the track that kicked off the writing for the album. Everything was panic stations at the time, it was my daughter that inspired the first set up with the lyrics “her mama says she can’t go out, baby girl maybe one day you’ll understand, when all of this is in the past”. I wanted to imbue it with a bit of hope too – it’s about leaning on your beliefs but more so it’s about standing united and staying the course, and the reality of simply getting by and getting through life”.

The Withers’ connection comes from the fact that the song was written the day that the iconic singer/songwriter died… no wonder’s there’s a feel of ‘Use Me’ to the track.

Party for One / Looking for Moses out Friday 14th January 2022 via Candelion. Cure the Jones album out Friday 1st April.
